Extend the Life of Your Bissell Vacuum
Too often we neglect our vacuums and then find that we have actually done some damage to the motor or some other part by not doing routine maintenance. Don't wait until the vacuum stops working to maintain it and you will be rewarded with a vacuum that will last many years. Also make sure that you have extra supplies onhand. If you have a bagged vacuum, you should have extra bags and always have at least one extra belt for any vacuum.
A Couple Things to Check On
Outside of emptying the bag on our vacuums, most of us don't do much maintenance, but when you are replacing the bag or emptying the cannister it is a good time to check on a few basic items. First check the suction through the hose by holding it against your hand. If the suction is not up to par, disconnect the hose from the vacuum and make sure it has no obstructions.
Always Check the Belt and Brush
Always make sure that you check the brush and remove any hairs or fibers wrapped around the brush. For long hair you may have to use a knife to cut the hair before you can pull it off the brush. Next carefully turn the vacuum on while you have it turned on its side so you can see the brush. If it is not moving there is an obstruction or the belt has come off. Also if the vacuum emits a high pitched sound the belt may be slipping. If the belt is off and, after you put it back on, it comes right back off, you need to replace the belt before vacuuming again.
Record Your Filter Changes
When you purchase bissell replacement parts, always pick up at least one extra filter to have on hand. When you replace your filter tape a post it note to the box of the next filter with the date of replacement. This way I always know how long it has been since the last replacement.
